#BrandBowl and Twitter Botox

This post is not about Superbowl ads, but rather how people watched, discussed and rated them...

Being that: 1) I live in London, 2) I don’t have a TV and 3) I don’t watch football (unless it’s with Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights), I was pretty out of the ad watch this year....

Anticipating that I’d wake up and YouTube the Superbowl ads and reviews (because that’s what really cool people do…) I was happy to see that Mullen and Radian6 had done some of the work for me, with BrandBowl 2010.

The BrandBowl site aggregated and analyzed tweets from thousands of people mentioning Super Bowl commercials (tagged as #BrandBowl) and translated them into a real-time, top-10 ranking of each brand’s popularity.  Where some people hash-tagged once or twice, others were involved in fast-paced, play by play advertising commentary.

Some thoughts on BrandBowl behaviour and Twitter:

In reviewing the #Brandbowl conversation it’s crystal clear that Twitter’s search functionality could use a face lift.  And boob job.  And some botox.  I’d like to see a new hashtag-like trending tool for entire conversations, such as BrandBowl 2010, so that I can review tweets by timeline, person and shout outs (both during and after the event is over).

Whether that’s in the form of a new platform altogether (which aggregates conversations), or acts as an extension on Twitter itself, I don’t care.  I just want an experience that allows me to filter through a discussion and pull out some main points, both during and after the fact.

On a research level, I’m often at a loss scanning the Twittersphere, where I can only search back a few days.  Twitter is the ultimate real-time research tool and should be saved for both social and anthropological research, so that in another 5 years (or 5 months), the new “digital natives” can look back and ponder on how a little birdie changed the way we interact – not only with other people – but with programming.

Hats off to Mullen for piggybacking on the “Oscars of Advertising” and flexing their social media muscles by demonstrating both creativity and success at harnessing a massive conversation.  In addition to creating and hosting this experience, they offered the last place finisher, Budwiser Select55, free creative services for next year's game.  Nice touch.

Do you agree in terms of reviewing the Twittersphere??

What do you think BrandBowl 2010 says about Twitter's power to connect communities???

Berlin Twitter Wall

Berlin Twitter Wall

I'm going to Berlin this weekend (wahoooo!) and hadn't realised the significance of my travel plans - just a week before the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall (Germany marks 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the country's reunification on November 9, 2009).

The Berlin Twitter Wall is a nice and simple execution by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH that encourages users to "share you thoughts on the historic Fall of the Wall and post a wish for the future. Just use the hashtag #fotw on twitter and after a while your message will appear on the twitterwall".

"By clicking "stop" and "play", older messages (tweets) will be shown. A click on the cameras up on the wall will show a selection of the domino-artwork that will fall in a symbolic act on November 9th 2009 at the "Fest der Freiheit" (festival of freedom) at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin".

Nothing revolutionary about this project, but I like the design and think it's a nice way to build a conversation around this topic.

While their Facebook Page had only 334 fans at the time of this post, I appreciate the effort to educate Page fans on the chronology leading up to the historic event.

An unfortunate case of Twitter...

Warning, this vid contains some naughty language...

Ever wondered what life would be like if you were limited to 140 characters per conversation???

No?? Yeah, me neither - but this pretty hilarious!

Also check out the Top 10 Twitter parody videos on Mashable, including Twitteleh, Flutter and more!

Enjoy ;)

"It's watering plants, Justin. You just take a G-d damned hose and you put it over the plant. You don't even pay rent, just do it. Shit."

If you're not on Twitter, join just to follow @shitmydadsays! (Or at least navigate to it).

Justin, a 28-year-old guy, lives with his 73-year-old father and literally tweets 'shit his dad says'.

His following has grown from a few thousand people to almost 206,000 in a matter of weeks! Amazeballs!!

When you've got more to say than 'tweet'

Check out Woofer, the new playground bully at Twitter High.

The macroblogging site is clearly a rip off of le Twitter but may be handy for those who are tired of being confined to 140 words...

Idea being, multiply twitter by 10 (so, 1,400 characters) and you've got the 'woof'.

Personally I'm getting a bit tired of having to choose between 8,530,045 different avenues to communicate ... Also, the fun of Twitter is that it is short status updates.  Isn't a macroblogging version of Twitter just a blog???

Some deep thoughts for your Monday...

Beware the not so casual shout out request...

This is happening more and more often these days - you're catching on to a trend (he hem... Twitter anyone?) and looking toward those in your network who are already on board.

Check out this Ben Stiller vid - a slightly exaggerated example of how not to ask your friends to give you a shout on Twitter... and how not to respond!

Take off your pants...!!

Yes, you heard me.

Levi's ran this cheeky iSpy Levi's campaign this summer in Australia and New Zealand. This short video case study sums it up pretty well, created by Host, in Oz.

Basically, Levi's needed to reconnect with their youth market, so they created a real-time treasure hunt whereby representatives wearing the jeans scattered throughout key cities in Oz and NZ and gave clues of their whereabouts via Twitter. Upon finding/spotting a rep in Levi's, and asking the "are they Levi's?" they'd drop their pants and give them to you!

I love the use of mobile, online and social media in this campaign, which is still going on down under. While the treasure hunt idea is by no means new, Levi's is doing it in a fun and very buzz-worthy way!

Check out this vid of TV presenter Maude Garrett dropping her Levi's.

Twitalytic... try saying that 12 times fast...

... I can almost get to 10...

Gina Trapani, a technology blogger and software developer, has created an alpha version of a Twitter application that archives your tweets and provides data about your followers (and how they interact with your account).

On her blog, Smarterware, Trapani discussed today some other features of Twitalytic:

"... you can curate replies and see other views of your data, like your “least likely” followers, your least and most active friends, your most replied-to tweets and more. For each of your friends or followers, you can see mutual friends, conversations you’ve had, and even what Twitter client that person uses most".

It's nice to see an increase in social media analytic applications. This type of application will be or particular interest to "uber-tweeters" and marketers in terms of easily finding and organizing your most active followers. Just as some companies reward and engage with loyal/influential bloggers, I think we'll slowly begin to see outreach to "top tweeters".

While this isn't the first Tweet archive (see here for similar apps), I like the idea of identifying your "key" followers, seeing mutual friends, and the overall push for measuring social media.

Tweet Feel

Twitter has quickly revolutionized and dominated 'social' real time search (it's trumping Google - read about it here, in Wired Magazine's July article on Eric Schmidt).

Thousands of Twitter applications have been popping up to measure, monitor and add utility to the micro-blogging system.

I find Tweet Feel to be one of the most useful Twitter applications so far in terms of monitoring real-time brand perceptions.  However, I still prefer Brand Tags (see my previous post) for a more holistic consumer opinion.

Tweet Feel: “Enter a brand, celebrity or anything else and our insanely complex analysis will tell you people’s attitudes about it”.
